SCULPTURES BY THE SEA

Sculpture by the Sea is an annual exhibition where artists come together to adorn Sydney's Bondi to Tamarama Beach shoreline with artworks in sculpted form, enticing us to differentiate the ways in which manmade objects work together with natures oceanic backdrop to form unison in an amazing expression of art.
As you follow the five tier trail of artworks, you are met with a heightened sense of delight through the different techniques and materials used to make up the sculptures. The breathtaking views of the trees, sand, ocean and sky, act as a beautiful canvas, caressing the stationed sculptures and making the entire experience even more spectacular. For a moment you are consumed within the thoughts behind each piece as you have stepped into its environment and become a part of its form.
The stunning Sculpture by the Sea exhibition is a not for profit open air art show conceived by David Handley; an Australian residing in London. In 1989, Handley found himself questioning the progression of the world as the Berlin Wall came down. He rushed to Berlin where he quickly became concerned on the basis of the death of Communism in a society where unchecked capitalism could be equally destructive. It was based on these perceptions that Handley thought up Sculpture by the Sea, a creative experience that would blend social and commercial in order to motivate the community and create harmony. Taking inspiration from a quote in 'Cultural Amnesia' that read 'to be born and raised in a prosperous liberal democracy not only confers the energy to see the world as it is, but the obligation to make sense of it, on behalf of those deprived of the opportunity', Handley decided to host the annual exhibition as a free event open to the public to reflect Australia’s cultural sophistication, whilst also remaining a relaxed and comfortable country. His aim was to fulfil the dreams of entrepreneurs whilst also attracting individuals on a global scale to come together and be inspired by the beauty of art.
2009’s exhibition, in its 13th year, is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This year also marks the success of Sculpture by the Sea becoming an international event, staged in the beautiful city of Aarhus, Denmark. Over half a million visitors each year visit the shoreline to celebrate how imagination framed by nature is used to enhance and highlight art and merge all forms of creativity.
The common theme this year, combined with the different mediums, colours, shapes, styles, and all aesthetical elements, shows you a glimpse of not only how each artwork speaks to the viewer, but also how it speaks within its environment and between each other. The surrounding atmosphere creates a mood to encourage a deeper message through the use of natural tones and hues created by the beach environment light when viewed at different times of the day.
